Cuckoosnews 06/02/08

And so it would appear true. Mark Paul has played his last match for Yaxley FC and departed for the new climes of the Jewson league division one, a drop of a level.

Paul has been and gone before so I will hold fire before eulogising too much about him or using him to open the Cuckoos legends section but this time it does feel like he wont be back.

To be fair the Leading Drove faithful will have seen the best of the striker who almost reached 70 goals a couple of seasons ago. Plucked from local football to the Dell and Southampton, Paul had spells down the road at POSH before taking in Bedford, Stamford, Kings Lynn and Wisbech.

He will always be a legend at the club and despite being upset that he has left for lower grade football, I still salute him!!!

To the Vulture Squad, he will forever be “The Great Mark Paul”.

Good luck at Ely.

It is strange to think that our first match without TGMP was the 2-1 over St Neots, a plucky win against the old enemy. It was bad weather and a heavy pitch, typical midwinter action on the edge of the fen.

It is a shame that we couldn’t follow that up with another win at bottom side Kempston but the main consistency in this season has been the inconsistency.

Still wherever we finish, as long as the off field improvements happen the club will have moved forward and that is all you can ask as a fan.

Let’s hope we get back on track for the run in and that the management team have another goalscorer up their sleeves for us to enjoy.

After Lee Clarke, Michael Frew and TGMP the fans expect nothing less!

Just to clarify the situation with TGMP, Mark has not left the club permanantly, he has taken on a job in Ireland with ex cuckoo Andy Chatters, and he needs a few weeks to get the job up and running and at present is having to travel from and too Ireland with Andy, therefore, is struggling to get back for games. I am hopefull we will see a fit Mark back in the blue shirt by the end of February.

Just to keep you supporters in the loop, we are developing the young talent of local Youth player Sam Makansi who has been regularly scoring for the reserves, and will be given an opportunity before the end of the season. We are also looking to bring in a further striker, but at this stage of the season is very difficult, but I can assure you that the management team is working very hard on developing players and will do everything possible to have a good end to the season, and hopefully bring a trophy back to Leading Drove this season.

An Ely City representative has this week revealed that Marl Paul’s recent turn-out for them is not intended as a regular event and that they expect him to be available to play for Yaxley for most of the rest of the season … watch this space!

Firstly, would like to go on record and congratulate the reserves on their recent form, Seb is doing a sound job developing our young players and I hope that the young guns can keep producing and we could get a top 4 finish in the division. This would be a great achievement for the club during a period of ‘change’where our mission this season is to give our youngsters the experience of senior football with the view to playing in our first team.

This leads me nicely on to our win today in the Hunts Senior Cup Semi Final, where we were heading out of the competition, but our lads never gave up and a product of our U18/Reserve side Sam Makansi came of the bench to take us in to extra time and he made a massive contribution to us reaching the final.

The club should be proud of our young players coming through, I know I am as first team manager.

But the first team squad deserve a pat on the back today for a ‘never say die attitude’ and hopefully we can transform this in to league form and pick up some much needed points.

Good points well made Gary!

The final will be tough after St Ives Vase run this season showed what a good outfit they are but in a one off match anything can happen.
