U16’s Show some steel…

HIGH-FLYING Yaxley brought Thorpe Wood back down to earth to keep themselves on course for the Division Three title.

Len Savage’s fast-improving Wood lads had smashed a club record 14 goals past PCH in their previous outing.

But against a Yaxley defence which has conceded a miserly three goals all season, a repeat of such scoring feats was never likely and Thorpe fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Jake Gauder made a scoring Yaxley debut after moving from Powerleague and Jack Black hit the other goal.

Yaxley assistant manager Angus Black said: “We are not taking anything for granted as Wisbech are still in the hunt and in very good form, but we are full of confidence having won every league game we have played so far this season.”

Black revealed he and boss Steve Elsom had to get tough on some of their ’star’ players to keep the Yaxley bandwagon rolling.

He added: “We had a few of the boys who didn’t think they had to turn up for training.

“Some of them just felt they had to turn up for matches on a Sunday and they could walk into the side, but they know different now.

“We played a lot of lads who do not normally get a start against Thorpe Wood and left out a few of our ’stars’ to teach them a lesson and I would say it worked.

“The reluctant trainers now know that if they do not put it in midweek, they won’t be in the team.”
